How much does it cost to build a website for a one-person service business?

There is no single price. The cost depends on who builds the site and what it has to do, and the range runs from nothing to many thousands of dollars.

For a solo service business, the cheapest route that works is often enough. Clients mostly need to see your services, prices, area and a way to book.

What does each route cost?

Prices below are US list prices checked on October 22, 2026. They change, so confirm on each pricing page before you pay.

Free booking page

Square's free plan costs $0 a month and includes an online booking site. You pay card fees only when a client pays, such as 3.3% plus 30 cents for an online card payment.

Square's booking tools also offer a Book Now button for Instagram, a Facebook page or a Google Business Profile. That covers booking without a separate website.

Free website builder plan

Wix lets you build a site for free. The free plan uses a Wix web address, and you need a paid plan to connect your own domain and remove Wix branding.

  • Squarespace Basic is $25 a month billed monthly, or $19 a month on an annual plan. There is no free plan, only a 14-day free trial.
  • Wix Light starts at $17.77 a month on a yearly plan. Wix shows these as US reference prices and says prices vary by location.
  • Booking on Wix comes with the Core plan and above, which starts at $29.77 a month on a yearly plan.

Paying a designer who uses a builder

Clutch's 2026 pricing guide puts web design firms that build on Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, Webflow or Shopify at about $25 to $49 an hour.

Clutch also notes that firms working on a builder charge less per hour than those who build from scratch. You still pay for the builder plan as well as the design time.

Hiring an agency

Clutch reports that US web design agencies charge about $100 to $149 an hour. Agency projects run from about $2,000 to $100,000, and most projects reviewed on Clutch cost less than $10,000.

For a one-person business, an agency is rarely needed at the start. It makes more sense once you want custom features or a full brand.

What do you keep paying after launch?

The build is only part of the bill. Plan for these recurring costs:

  • The builder plan, monthly or yearly.
  • Your domain. Squarespace and most Wix annual plans include a free domain for the first year, then you pay to renew it.
  • Booking, which some builders only include on higher plans, as Wix does from Core.
  • Card fees each time a client pays online.

A Google Business Profile costs nothing. It puts your business on Google Search and Maps, so set it up whichever route you pick.

What makes the price go up?

Clutch lists the main things that raise the cost of a designed site:

  • More pages.
  • More features, such as payments, a store or a chatbot.
  • A custom style with animation or video.
  • Copywriting.
  • SEO work.

A solo service business rarely needs most of these at first. A few pages with services, prices, service area, photos and a booking button is a common starting point.

Which route makes sense on a small budget?

  1. Start with a free Google Business Profile and a free booking page.
  2. Move to a paid builder plan when you want your own domain and more control over the look.
  3. Pay a designer or agency only for the parts you cannot or do not want to do yourself.

If you do ask someone to build it, compare their price with a year of a builder plan. For keeping a quote from growing, see the guide to a simple booking website without price creep.

Frequently asked questions

Is a free website enough for a mobile barber?

It can be at the start. Square's free plan includes an online booking site, and a Google Business Profile is free.

Move to a paid plan when you want your own domain or more control over how the site looks.

Should I pay monthly or yearly for a website builder?

Yearly is cheaper per month. Squarespace Basic is $19 a month on an annual plan, against $25 billed monthly.

Annual plans on Squarespace and most yearly Wix plans also include a free domain for the first year.

Why do web designers say "it depends" when I ask the price?

Because the price follows the scope. Clutch lists pages, features, style, copywriting and SEO as the main things that change a web design bill.

Send a short list of the pages and features you need, so they can give you a real number.

Can I try a website builder before I pay?

Yes. Wix has a free plan, Squarespace has a 14-day free trial, and Wix paid plans come with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Square's free plan has no monthly fee, so you only pay processing fees when a client pays.
